Expert Shares Perspective on Ethical AI Use

(MENAFN) As artificial intelligence (AI) technology advances, distinguishing manipulated videos from authentic ones will become increasingly challenging, despite current signs that still give deepfakes away, a specialist explained to a news agency.

Christian Darkin, the creative AI director at UK-based Deep Fusion Films, highlighted certain indicators that suggest a video has been digitally altered.

He pointed out that in such footage, “the image breaks up,” and there’s often “a slightly less alive look in the eyes” of the individuals depicted, in addition to a marginally reduced image clarity.

Speaking at the GITEX Europe 2025 technology exhibition in Berlin, Darkin shared insights from his 20-year career in visual effects within the film sector, emphasizing how AI has revolutionized the entire process of filmmaking.

“People have got a very bad opinion of what deepfakes are because they can be used in some really quite awful ways,” he explained.

“But, if you imagine a stunt person films a scene for a movie, then you want to replace the stunt person’s face with the face of the original actor, well, that's a deepfake -- that’s an ideal way to use that kind of technology.”

He further elaborated on positive applications of deepfakes, such as recreating historical personalities using existing voice recordings from past interviews and other sources.

“The really important thing is to make sure you’re going to be ethical about it, to make sure everybody knows that what you’re doing isn’t real,” he stressed.

Darkin also warned that AI-generated deepfakes could convincingly imitate real-life recordings, reinforcing the importance of clearly “labeling of AI” in such content to uphold transparency and ethical standards.
